2010 Projects (Part 1 of 3): Aloha Supreme

by Christine Bougie | March 2nd, 2010

lap steel hands-colourMy first album, Hammy’s Secret Life, was released in 2007.  Then in 2008,  I made This Is Awesome, a collaboration with longtime musical partner Dafydd Hughes.  In 2009,  I was too busy playing on other people’s albums to make my own, so 2010 is the year.  I’m just about to begin recording my next album, and I’m going to call it Aloha Supreme.

When I set out to write this music, I wanted to feature the lap steel more than I had on my previous albums. The result…

Aloha Supreme is a collection of lyrical, wordless, genre-bending songs, with melodies played (mostly) on lap steel.

the players

the band

  • Bryden Baird – trumpet
  • Andrew Downing – cello
  • Drew Jureka – violin
  • Julia Hambleton – bass clarient

producer

  • Dean Drouillard – Dean produced my last two albums, and he’s my 5th Beatle.

the music

This list might change a bit over the next few months, but it’s a good place to start…

money

Though my fingers are crossed that I’ll get the Ontario Arts Council grant, I’m prepared to put this one on my Visa.  I’ve also been looking into some fundraising sites like Kickstarter and Kapipal, so crippling debt may not be my only option.  If you have an ideas about how I can raise money for this recording, let me know.

update!

(March 30th, 2010) Didn’t get the OAC grant, so I’ve set up a page to accept donations and pre-orders.  Click on the button below to check it out…

  1. holy moly! very excited to see how it comes out, and very glad to see some of my beloved tunes in that list. I don’t know of many albums in which lap steel is more centre-stage, and I’m sure it’ll get lots of play at my house.

anyway, thanks for telling us about this! as a non-musician I’m excited to find out about the process of making a record.

  2. Would love to pre-purchase a copy if that helps.

  3. Demos are great! Sign me up for a copy!

  4. Dear Wife,

You are the most talented human being, EVER.
    xoxo

  5. Pre-sales? I’d be happy to pay for the record in advance. Twice. Hammy’s Secret Life is one of my favorite records of the last 5 years.

  6. thanks everybody! it’s nice to get feedback so early in the process. guess I should look into setting up pre-sales…

  7. love these demos! hope u get the grant.
I agree with the others – pre-sale campaign!

    xo

  8. What Ali said. I’ll buy 2.

  9. Shelley Coopersmith says:

Count me in; I’d pre-pay. Listening to Chet & Chomsky demo; I like your tune titles. Good luck and I’m sure you’ll do well, another awesome venture!

  10. I want a meher ring tone.

  11. You could also have a cd fundraising party/show thing. Like a cd release, where you play the tunes from the new record or something and charge a lot of money at the door, and the money goes to help pay for your record!
