23 People I Really Appreciate

Today’s Reverb10 prompt is:

Appreciate.

What’s the one thing you have come to appreciate most in the past year? How do you express gratitude for it? (prompt author: Victoria Klein)

Just one? How about 23?

In 2010, I raised almost $5500 toward the making of my album, Aloha Supreme. In the liner notes of the CD, I devoted one whole panel to THANK YOU’S.  I thanked all the biggest contributors…

But there still wasn’t enough room to express my full appreciation.

I figure today is a perfect opportunity to expand my gratitude.

Ali Eisner – My number one, of course. Ali is the most loving, generous and enthusiastically supportive person in my life.

Dean Drouillard – My 5th Beatle. I appreciate so much about Dean – the way he works, his brilliant ideas. He’s the best.

Dafydd Hughes – The other half of my musical brain. Appreciate is too weak a word to describe how I feel about Dafydd.

Toronto Arts Council – Okay. Not technically a person, but oh how I appreciate the TAC. And a couple days ago I received my second composition grant from them! So grateful.

Joel Stewart – Joel went above and beyond in his support of this record. I play in his band. He treats his musicians like gold. A lovely man.

Marcus Wilson – Marcus contacted me about using one of my tunes as the opening music to a podcast he was working on.  I gave my permission and asked for nothing in return but my name in the credits.  Then when I started fundraising to make my new album, Marcus was one of the first to donate. He wrote a nice article about it here.

Amy Millan – To list all the things I appreciate about Amy, I would have to create an entire series on the blog. Things I appreciate about Amy: Part 1 – her giant heart. Let’s start there.

Andrea Ridgley – Andrea is one of the strongest and smartest women I know.  What I appreciate most about her: no bullshit. If we were friends back in the mid 90′s, I would refer to her as “solid.” And then I might say she’s wicked awesome.

Dave Lang – The best soundman in Canada. The most generous man on earth? What other soundman shows up for the last show on a week long tour with a fancy bottle of wine for each band member? Only Dave Lang.

John Harris – My high school math teacher turned pen-pal. His passion for music is contagious. I’m trying to get him to start his own blog. It would rule.

Shirley Cove – Shirley was best-friends with my aunt Ginette way back when.  She always gave me the most thoughtful Christmas presents and birthday gifts – the kind that showed how much she got me.  She saw the aspiring artist in me, even before music came along, when I was obsessed with drawing. And thanks to facebook, we’ve reconnected.

John Russon – A true patron of the arts. I also appreciate that he didn’t mind when I played his guitar last night at that birthday party. It was late, I was warm and fuzzy from the hot cider and bourbon.

Brian Deignan – Another very generous patron of the arts. Every time I see Brian, he gives me a new mixed CD. He’s introduced me to so much music over the past year.

Julie Fader – I love Julie. One of my favourite people. Ever.

Lia Grimanis – Lia was the one who told me about the Kapipal site. She made the whole thing possible!

Tom Power – A lovely man. What do I appreciate most about Tom? His humour and his heart.

Kari Romaniuk – Kari is Dean’s lady. Or, Dean is Kari’s man. She’s been so supportive ever since I first began collaborating with Dean…6 years ago?

Paul and Annie Eisner – Ali’s parents. I’m so appreciative of their support. They are two of the biggest cheerleaders in my life. I love them.

John Fraser – John and I played jazz together in high school. I always appreciated how respectful he was when we were teens.  I haven’t seen him face to face for so many years, but I bet he’s just as cool and sweet as he was back then.

Patty Meredith – When I got Patty’s donation to the album, I sat scratching my head for a while. “Who is Patty Meredith? Is she one of my mom’s co-workers or something? Would a complete stranger donate this much money to this project?” Well, it turns out that she was a total stranger! But I got to meet her in Victoria when I was on tour with Joey Wright. She showed up for our little show and she brought friends. She even offered to put us up at her place for the night! I appreciate this woman’s support on a whole other level.

Rob McBride and Sarah Jerrom – Rob is one of my best friends. Since high school! And when I met his girlfriend, Sarah, I knew right away that she was the one for him. They’re getting married in September. I’m smiling as I write this. I love these guys.

There are more people I could thank. Other people involved in making the record: Paul Mathew, Kieran Adams, Bryden Baird, Andrew Downing, Julia Hambleton, Angela Lee, James Paul…You know I love and appreciate you guys.

Heart bursting with gratitude. XOXO
