I’m very blessed to have a lot of funny people in my life. My girlfriend says that her goal in life is to make me laugh until I cry at least once a week. She usually succeeds.
But the funniest person of all, the one who makes me laugh more than anyone else, is Mr. Dan Whiteley.
How can I even explain Dan? If you know him, than you know how funny he is. When we’re on tour with Amy, he makes me laugh so hard that it feels like I’ve been doing sit-ups all day.
One of the funniest moments of our last tour together happened like this:
On a long drive day somewhere out west, I found out that my aunt died of a heart attack (not funny at all, very sad!)
I was sitting in the back of the van, feeling pretty sad and crying to myself. I shared the news with everyone in the band, and the next hour or so was particularly somber and quiet in the van. So time goes by, everyone is quietly doing their own thing, and I notice that Dan, who is sitting in front of me, has a shirt pulled over his head, like an old widow…
…he had been sitting like this for I don’t even know how long. Maybe an hour?
The funniest thing about this is that he wasn’t trying to make me laugh, or cheer me up, although that’s exactly what ended up happening. He was just being Dan – sitting there, looking like a widow in mourning with a serious face for miles and miles. He just did this unconsciously.
I’m not sure if it even makes sense to you why this was so funny to me. But it cracked me up. It was definitely one of the biggest laughs I had all year. Maybe it was because my emotions were so heightened, and I needed the release of a good laugh to chill me out.
grandmothers are smart
My grandmother (my Memere, the mother of this aunt who died) said to me on the phone:
“You have to laugh. Otherwise you’d be crying all the time!”
She’s dealt with the deaths of three of her children in the last few years. Hard to imagine. Yet, every time I see her we share so many laughs.
