Bittersweet

How personal should a blog be?

What do you decide to keep to yourself?  What do you decide to share?

I say: share as much as you’re comfortable sharing.

While I like to keep the focus of this blog on my music and my creative life, sometimes I need to go a bit deeper.

Last night a friend died unexpectedly.  It’s so sad and shocking.  This morning I hesitated to post anything to my blog, even though I’ve committed to posting every Monday, Tuesday and Thursday.  I was planning on writing an update on the album I’m recording. But writing about my music seems so trivial.

Death brings so much perspective, and it makes mundane things seem…somehow really insignificant and infused with depth and meaning at the same time.

So I couldn’t just post about my music and not mention that I’m feeling terrible about this friend’s death.

She wasn’t a close friend, but she was someone I really liked. Someone I just saw 3 days ago.  She was so nice, so warm, so incredibly giving and caring, and an amazing chef, too!

This morning, most of my friends are getting together to honour Elizabeth, who passed away last night so unexpectedly.  I won’t be there.  Instead, I will be recording, putting the finishing touches on my album. The album is finished!  Something to be happy about.  Happiness mixed with sadness. This is what people mean by “bittersweet,” right?

Sorry to hear about the sad news. It’s easy to forget how fragile our existences really are…good luck with the music today.

  2. I agree Christine. Everyone is affected when someone who is only 29 dies suddenly, no matter how close they were. It throws things into focus in a different way. I liked your post, and have been thinking a lot about this today too and really feeling for the folks who were obviously way closer than me too.
