Community + Accountability

Today’s Reverb10 prompt, from Cali Harris:

Community.

Where have you discovered community, online or otherwise, in 2010? What community would you like to join, create or more deeply connect with in 2011?

I’ve been thinking about this one all day. I don’t even know where to begin.

My first idea was to write about The Tranzac – home of my Monday night gig for the past 3 years. It’s where I just had my CD release party. It’s my local.

But my friend Ali Berkok wrote about The Tranzac for his response to today’s prompt. So read his post!

What I’d like to share is a quote from Scott Belsky (author of Making Ideas Happen):

“Accountability, one of the most crucial benefits of engaging with your community, is what binds you to the relentless pursuit of your ideas.  As you become accountable to others, your creative impulses become tangible projects.  Your ideas grow roots.  Community strengthens both your creative energy and your commitment to channel it.”

That quote sums up the year for me, in terms of community.

September 2010 marked my first full year of engaging with a community online.

In 2011, I want to grow these connections and bring more of them into my physical world. I want to have more dinner parties, basically.

I used to live in a place that had a door off the kitchen, set back enough that even on sunny winter days you could have it open. One of my favourite memories was prepping a “Big Night” dinner party. Big ass sammiches the likes you’ve never seen. And wine. Bottle after bottle. Of course, a soundtrack had also been assembled for the evening. Dinner parties rock!
