I love David Byrne

by Christine Bougie | August 25th, 2009

David Byrne = my current musical crush.  I’m obsessed.  Have you seen Stop Making Sense? It’s brilliant. This part in particular kills me.  It’s one of the most beautifully staged performances I’ve ever seen, one that does what music does at it’s best…

“This Must Be The Place (Naive Melody)”

I could watch that 1000 times.  In fact, I probably have watched that 1000 times.

I’m currently working my way through his catalogue in a random fashion.  Ali found The Catherine Wheel on vinyl, so that’s the latest discovery.  I’m especially intrigued about it being commissioned by Twyla Tharp, who’s book The Creative Habit is one of my absolute favourites.  (I’ll have to save that for another post.)

As well as being a brilliant musician, performance artist, and visual artist, he’s also very articulate about the music business.  Even though the article is 2 years old, it’s worth checking out Byrne’s Survival Strategies For Emerging Artists – and Megastars .  It’s still relevant, and it’s well-researched.  Also, listen to Byrne interview Thom Yorke on the Real Value of Music.

Go to his website and spend at least one hour immersed in his stuff. Even if you think you know his stuff well enough.  C’mon do it.  Then I’ll have someone to share my obsession with.

Hey C, I think he is pretty great too. I am not obsessed right now like you but maybe this will be the push I need. I have time and not enough gigs right now. (even considering getting a part time job) Let me know if you hear of any banjo/mando players needed. (still play guitar too!)

P.S. I love David Byrne also. I remember getting the first Talking Heads album and listening to it over and over. That continues with most of the albums he has put out.. I also really like his album with Brian Eno. Thanks for the reminder I listened to it while I wrote this. I am a true music nut.

    Hope to se you soon………………

  4. Kat’s a big Talking Heads nerd. She tries all the time to get me on board. Strange Overtones is killing shit lately ’cause most things signed Eno are an easy sell on me though.
Next Halloween, I’m making a suit for two.

  5. I am digging your site the most. I can’t wait to keep exploring every morning. Thanks for that video, it started my day right.

  6. One of my favorite nights of music was playing Hammond at Carnegie Hall with David. We did Naive Melody, Once in a lifetime and Allen Ginsberg sat in to sing ‘Heaven’. I had never rehearsed, and DB treated me like i’d been in the band for years. He’s totally musical and present to the present for certain.
