Larry Carlton

by Christine Bougie | April 12th, 2010

People ask me what guitarists I listen to.  Well, I’m not as into guitarists as I was as a teenager. These days, I’m more into songs and composition.

I used to listen to any guitar music I could get my hands on.  I was in a discovery phase.  I devoured everything by Metheny, Scofield, and Frisell. Now, when I listen back to the music that shaped my ears in those formative years, I really appreciate the guys in the background – the session players.

In particular, I love Larry Carlton‘s work on Joni Mitchell’s Court And Spark.  This is some of the most beautiful and inspiring guitar work I’ve ever heard.

  1. this is really great!
I grew up listening to Joni Mitchell and Pat Metheny on family road trips, and remember the first time I heard Jaco Pastorius playing fretless bass… I’d never heard anything like it before, and it was shockingly different to me as a kid! It’s easy to see how from there on, I kind of developed a taste for the unconventional..

You’re so right-Larry’s parts on Court and Spark are heaven-sent and a great example of what an inspired sideman can do to really lift the music up. Another cat that I’ve really enjoyed more recently is Dean Parks who has done some amazing stuff with Lyle Lovett and also on Viktor Krauss’ solo work (his two CDs are abolutely essential!)
