The Making Of Aloha Supreme: Blanche & Rose

(I’m working on a new album, Aloha Supreme, to be released in October 2010. This post is part of a series in which I share demos and stories behind each tune on the new album. For more details, read this.)

This is so sad.  I finished this post, went over to Twitter to share it, and found out that Blanche (Rue McClanahan) just died.

I wrote this tune for Blanche & Rose, who were, up until today, the last surviving Golden Girls.

Ali and I watched all 7 seasons of The Golden Girls last year.  If you haven’t seen it in a while, I highly recommend you revisit the show. The writing is SO funny.  And of course the acting is amazing.

So I wrote this tune shortly after finishing the series.  I imagined it to be the opening theme music to a new TV show, in which their (Blanche and Rose’s) story would continue.  It would be an HBO style show, so it’d be funny, but in that dark Six Feet Under way.

I can’t believe Rue went before Betty.

Well, I’m still going to go with my original idea and call it “Blanche & Rose.”   I’ll just imagine that this show already aired in the early 2000’s.

I just happened to be listening to Hammy’s Secret Life when I got your tweet. I had to pause it to listen to “Blanche & Rose”. Will that be on the new album? I love it, and thanks for the chart. It’s fun to follow along. Great composition.

  2. Hey Phil,
Yep, it’ll be on the album. This is just a demo, so the actual version will have horns, clarinet, wurlitzer, and possibly a cheesy drum machine bossa-nova part.

    Glad you like it!
