The Making Of Aloha Supreme: I Just Wasn’t Made For These Times

I’m working on a new album, Aloha Supreme, to be released in October 2010.  For more details, read this.

A few months ago, Dafydd and I celebrated the 2nd year of our weekly residency at The Tranzac by performing Pet Sounds in it’s entirety, along with special guest  Julia Hambleton on clarinet.

Well, after putting all that work into learning those beautiful songs, I thought it would be nice to include one on my album…and to use the same instrumentation – lap steel, wurlitzer and clarinet.

I chose “I Just Wasn’t Made For These Times” because it’s my all-time favourite Beach Boys tune.  (Second runner up is “Darlin'”)

I think I’m going to get Andrew Downing to come back in and overdub some cello on the track, but I want to keep this one fairly sparse.

Here’s a short teaser of what we recorded (not yet mixed, of course)…

Audio clip: Adobe Flash Player (version 9 or above) is required to play this audio clip. Download the latest version here. You also need to have JavaScript enabled in your browser.

Here’s the original version by The Beach Boys…

And check out this footage of Brian Wilson rehearsing it in 2001…

Now I just need to figure out the licensing stuff.  I hear it’s something like 4 cents/copy?  If anyone has any advice for me about recording other people’s songs, please email me or leave a comment below. Thanks!
