Ali and I are doing some rearranging of rooms in the house. This includes combining our offices, getting rid of the guest room (don’t worry, we’re keeping the extra bed), and best of all, making a new music room! Yep, our old bedroom is going to be the new music room.
It’s weird that we haven’t had a dedicated room for all of our gear. It’s dumb, really. When we have to record something, we’re always setting up messy little temporary studios in the bedroom or living room.
So far, we’ve emptied out the old bedroom and tossed in our gear.
We’re still figuring out exactly what belongs in this room. It’s not going to be the room I teach in, and it’s not going to have any office stuff in it. In fact, our hope is to keep it relatively paper-free.
This room is going to be used for:
- playing
- rehearsing
- practicing
- recording
- writing
Do you have a dedicated music room at home?
Do you have any tips for us before we start to set up this room?

Depending on how much recording and mixing you plan to do you might want to look into dampening the wall and floor reflections with a rug and maybe some panels or hung cloths/fabric on the walls (stuff you could remove if you want more ambience for tracking.) Also, a little couch if there’s room and, most important, strings of pretty Christmas lights for cozy creative vibes!
You have a banjo! Have you done much recording with it? It’s a great instrument, I’d love to hear you play it.
I guess that wasn’t really a comment about how to arrange the room. Ummm… put the banjo in a prominent, easily accessible place?
@deltaslide – thanks for the advice. the room definitely needs dampening.
@james – yep – we have a banjo. I don’t play it much, but it usually ends up being played when we have house parties.
Hey Christine, we have a tiny music room/studio, and the smartest thing we did was put the guitars/basses up on the wall and put the cases under our bed. Made more space for drums!
Hope all is well, and happy birthday, belated:)
