Weekly Recap #3: What I’m Listening To, Reading and Watching

Away from Her (Music from the Motion Picture) – Jonathan Goldsmith [ALBUM]

The perfect film score. This is one of my go-to albums when I sit at my computer to write. Bach played on electric guitar with really gentle loops fluttering in the background. Hugh Marsh, George Koller. If you haven’t seen the film yet, you really should. Then buy the soundtrack. Maybe it has something to do with Canadian sensibilities, but Sarah Polley’s films feel so emotionally familiar. And Jonathan Goldsmith’s music is completely tied to that feeling. I can’t imagine this film having any other music. I feel the same way about Take This Waltz, another Sarah Polley/Jonathan Goldsmith collaboration.

Thelonious Monk – Pure Monk [ALBUM]

Seems to be only available on vinyl. I’ve been listening to this a lot over the past few weeks. 2 LPs of solo piano.

The Missing Myth – Gilles Herrada [BOOK]

“Why is homosexuality an issue?” That’s a big question and this book does a fantastic job of exploring it through the lens of “integral theory.” You don’t need to know much about integral theory to understand this book (but it doesn’t hurt). Basically, the author looks at homosexuality throughout history through three different lenses: Plato’s Good, True and Beautiful. In integral theory terms, that would be the perspectives of We (inter-subjective), It (objective) and I (subjective).

The Power of Myth – Joseph Campbell, Bill Moyers [TV SPECIAL]

This is television at its educational best. I remember watching this in high school as part of a media studies class. As I’ve been re-watching it all on YouTube I’ve been thinking about how cool it would be for someone to do a modern remake. Like Carl Sagan’s Cosmos.
