Well, that’s sort of a secret. I can tell you a bit about the origins of this cover art, though. A lot of people ask me about this album cover. Usually, my first response is “my friend Angela Lee came up with it…she’s a genius.” That’s the truth. I basically gave her the title of the album, and she came up with this insane piece of art.
Hammy is a hamster, of course. But when I wrote the tune “Hammy’s Secret Life,” it wasn’t actually meant to be about a hamster. It was written for a friend of mine (who’s name sounds like “Hammy” when you say it in a certain language) who had to live a bit of a secret life for a while. I can’t tell you any more about it. It’s a secret!
The Elvis Suit
Why is Hammy dressed like Elvis?
He’s wearing my Halloween costume….
First Draft
Can you believe this was the first draft? It’s perfect. I was ready to use this exact version as the cover.
Angela doesn’t have a website. If she did, I would link to it all over the place. She is a genius. You can play a hilarious game called “Scoops” that she made for CBC’s kids site.

I have to admit, the album title did have me wondering. However, now that I know the true origin of the name, it won’t stop me from thinking about what kind of things a hamster could get into if she or he had a “secret life.” I’ve always been one to imagine the animals at the zoo punching the time clock and heading out the gate at the end of their day. The secret life of a hamster is definitely fodder for my imagination.
Great album, BTW.
